Green Smoothies

Everyone has heard “greens are good for you” or “eat your greens” but few people realize the extent to which it is true. Greens are one of the most nutritious whole foods we can eat but we rarely eat enough of them.  The truth is you can get more nutrition in a pint of green smoothie than most people get in a full day of “normal” eating! Green smoothies provide us with the nutrition our bodies need; they are loaded with anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, living enzymes, phytonutrients and amino acids (protein). That’s right, you get PROTEIN from greens!

Think about this…the cow gets her protein from grass, a leafy green. Wouldn’t it be simpler to get your protein from leafy greens too, rather than eat the cow? What about gorillas, buck, zebra, elephants, hippo, giraffes, apes – the list of herbivores is endless!

I love having green smoothies for breakfast, they charge me right up. They reduce my food cravings and keep me energized and full until lunch. I almost forgot the best part……THEY TASTE GOOD TOO!!!

Ingredients:

2 frozen bananas

1-2 cups of water

1 diced mango

Huge handful of spinach, usually about 2-3 cups

1 teaspoon of agave nectar (to add a little sweetness)

*You may add any other fruit you like -get creative and try variations with apples, pears, oranges, blueberries, pineapple, etc.

*Be sure to switch up the greens you use too, like using Kale, Romaine or Swiss chard. Greens have alkaloids that are good in small quantities but slightly toxic if you eat the same green day-after-day. Greens are a lot like homeopathic remedies.

*You may add dates for a sweetener also

Directions:

I put everything in a high-speed blender in this order:  frozen bananas, water, mangos, agave, and spinach.  Blend all ingredients until smooth. If you are having trouble getting it to blend, add more liquid — just a little at a time. If the smoothie is too watery, add more banana or fruit.
